Urrrp. Excuse me. Leandro needs your help with a Science Fair Project (on –what else? –burping)

1 Apr

Dear Hot, Cheap & Easy Readers,

This is Leandro. I am doing a Science Fair Project on burps.

I would like to know if it is polite or not to burp at the dinner table in different countries. Can you comment here about it? Don’t forget to tell me which country!

Thank you,

Leandro

(The project is due Saturday, April 6)

    Hi Leandro,

We live in Puerto Rico, and you’ve even been to our house. It’s not polite to burp at the dinner table in Puerto Rico, but sometime it happens, and usually everyone laughs.

Hi Leandro! It’s your Titi Nikki here. 🙂 In Sweden it is considered rude to burp at the table! If you do burp you would say “ursäkta mig”, which means excuse me. Good luck with the project! We miss you!

    Hi leonardo.
In my country burp out infront of other people is disrespectful. If you do it, you have to say perdon or disculpa.

    HI Leandro,

In Germany, where I lived for 3 months, it is okay to burp. It is a sign that it is a good meal. Good luck on your project!

It’s not polite to burp in England, but I do remember that Frank Zappa sampled his nephew burping and used it in some music 😉

Well, it is not polite to do it in Panama or Spain. But accordingly to Wikipedia, in the right context, it is acceptable in china and India. Good luck to Leandro 😉

    Dear Leandro,
I was brought up by a Finnish mother and a Finnish grandmother and was always told that burping was extremely rude.

For this reason, I was both shocked and amused to find out that Amish people feel it is impolite NOT to burp or belch after a meal.In the Amish world, burping shows that you enjoyed the food and it is also a way to thank the person who prepared the meal.

Please let us know the results of your survey. You picked a very unique and interesting topic !!!!

Thank you. That was interesting. I didn’t know that about the Amish. We were in Pennsylvania once. Leandro

Dear Leandro, In Canada . . . at least for those of us descendent from the United Kingdom (English/Irish/Scottish) burping at the table is in very poor taste. Think of Queen Victoria and her famous quotation, “We are NOT amused.”
But I can tell you that in the home I grew up in . . . there was a lot of burping! It was still considered bad manners to do so at the table . . . but mostly when we had company in or were out to dinner! “Family casual” would include some burping contests. But I had brothers. That may have been the root of the issue ;-)!
Good luck with your project and thanks for including us. I would love to learn about your survey results.

impolite in Romania as well. it was a bit of a culture shock for me when I moved to the US to hear people burp loudly in public. in Romania people do it more subtly if they cannot stop it. good luck with the project 😉

Dear Leandro, You may not remember me from camping in Montauk 2 years ago, but I remember you! You and your mom came and sat around our fire and made s’mores with us. In the USA it is mostly seen as impolite to burp at the table. Unfortunately, sometimes it just happens, in which case a quick, “Excuse me! ” is always in order. Hope to see you and mom again!

hi Leandro. I’ll be going to Ethiopia soon and I promise I’ll find out. My sister’s going too, and she burps a lot.

I have heard people say that in some countries it is considered a compliment to the chef to burp, but definitely not in Chile, where my family is from… it’s considered very rude and you are expected to say excuse me if one slips out… good luck with your project – I hope it wins a prize!

  20. Pavel (Paul) Kucera April 1, 2013 at 4:40 pm #

Hi Leandro, this is Pavel (Paul) from Prague, the Czech Republic. Burping at the dinner table is considered rude here.

But, I have seen on the net that “India, Turkey and some Middle Eastern countries and even in parts of China it is considered good manners to burp after a meal. It’s a sign of appreciation and satiety.”

Not very polite here in Ireland. Not that it stops my daughters…

    • Natalia at Hot, Cheap & Easy April 1, 2013 at 4:38 pm #

Leandro says: That’s funny. Thank you for helping me with my project. What are you supposed to say in Ireland after you burp?

      • Conor Bofin April 1, 2013 at 4:43 pm #

        “Pardon me” or “Excuse me”.

        Not for the project:
I have been known to say “better an empty house than a bad tenant.”

        Kids have a rhyme too:
Pardon me for being so rude
It was not me, it was my food
It just came up to say hello
Now it’s gone ack down below

      • Natalia at Hot, Cheap & Easy April 1, 2013 at 4:58 pm #

That was very funny! Thank you for telling me that.
